As Educational Technology Leaders, Lakeland CSD Sought a District-Wide Learning Platform Partnership
Lakeland Central School District (CSD), the largest suburban district in New York State’s Westchester County, is on a mission to prepare students for a rapidly changing world. To that end, their Technology Department, who set the bar as early smart board adopters, continues to introduce innovative solutions that benefit students, and has earned multiple Pioneer Awards from the Lower Hudson Regional Information Center.
As Lakeland transitioned to remote learning in 2020, K-12 Instructional Technology Coach Scott Staub and other leaders quickly identified five or six high-impact tools needed to maximize instruction. By focusing regular professional development (PD) sessions around those, they could help staff adjust to the unpredictable challenges of teaching during a pandemic, and support district-wide objectives around student engagement and formative assessment.
The Teacher-Powered Push for a Quizizz District Plan
Enter Quizizz. A teacher-powered interactive learning platform, Quizizz makes it easy for educators to find and create engaging activities students love, and get the formative insights they need. Staub and team decided on Quizizz as a key district-wide solution for several reasons, but it all started with Lakeland’s teachers. In addition to regular, hour-long PD opportunities, Staub’s department hosted Q&A sessions. In those sessions, Staub says “teachers started talking about Quizizz.”
The district had used Kahoot!, Gimkit, and other tools but many teachers saw these as too gamified — capturing students’ attention but also distracting from meaningful learning. Teachers preferred the gamified elements on Quizizz, like Redemption Questions and Power-Ups, along with its broader variety of question types. It was also one of the most requested platforms that was compliant with NYS Education Law-2d. Access to priority, responsive support and PD were additional factors that led Staub and team to go with a district plan versus managing multiple, individual accounts for teachers.
“A Quizizz District Plan was the obvious choice for all of our schools because teachers asked for it, first and foremost,” Staub said. “From there, Quizizz was fully aligned with district initiatives around student engagement and formative assessment, was compliant with NYS EdLaw 2-d, and came packaged with comprehensive PD.”

Today, all Lakeland students, from 5th graders at Van Cortlandtville Elementary School to Copper Beech Middle School world language students and beyond, enjoy engaging full-scope Quizizz activities across instruction, reinforcement and review. Recently, when Lakeland had to switch its Google domain, Staub simply contacted his dedicated Quizizz Account Manager who ensured none of Lakeland’s teachers lost their lessons, assignments or reports. Staub learned first-hand that Quizizz, although used in over 80% of U.S. schools today, isn’t too big to provide responsive customer support.
Lakeland’s partnership with Quizizz plans to continue providing opportunities to empower teachers, and motivate students in the classroom and beyond.
